We are a physical theatre & mime company whose core artistic work stems from free-writing and movement.
Within recent years, we have sought to bring a larger-than-life ‘cinema feeling’ to our work. Since our first show The Things That I’ve Dismissed, sound design and lighting (alongside a helping of torches and sellotape) made an impact on stage, amongst the passion for bringing truthful stories and experiences to life via strong ensemble movement and spoken-word.
The initial assumed necessity of ‘spoken-word’ became simply the exercise of free-writing in the search for a certain honesty; a ‘no-holding-back’ nor heavily critiqued look for the potential stories we hold within. To write without judgement is not only therapeutic, but also - if allowed, holds the potential to be a powerful and honest theatrical language.
Since The Things That I’ve Dismissed, Feel The Fear and the development of our third show The Maniac Complex (Southend Fringe, VAULT Festival 2022) we began to push further for a cinema-feeling through the technical elements, and in conjunction within our heightened physical flare, we are now wholly embracing the artform of mime as a major role in communicating these stories.
Project Lockout began as an idea back in 2016 by Artistic Director Michael Lynch, with early work influenced by companies such as Frantic Assembly (Frantic Ignition Graduate 2015) and Urban Conceptz Theatre, Project Lockout stepped into its own through a small collection of artists established in 2017 at East 15 Acting School.
With a nation-wide lockdown stunting all plans and our VAULT Festival debut, our ensemble and collective physical approach ceased. Now, forced to re-imagine the future, Artistic Director Michael Lynch delves the company into the world of film, with hopes to bring a new strength to the brilliance of theatre.

Specialising in movement direction, he graduated BA Physical Theatre at East 15 Acting School (2019) and Frantic Assembly’s Ignition project back in 2015. Since founding Project Lockout, he has been both director and movement director for company shows and digital projects since establishing itself in 2017; he has also led workshops for Oxford University (2018) and headed movement direction at Theatre Royal Stratford East (2019) for their National Connections company.
Michael believes in empowering people through movement practice in conjunction with freewriting; supporting this belief through the creation of short art documentaries from company workshops.
As a performer he toured with Justice In Motion in On Edge, a parkour performance piece highlighting the issue of modern day slavery. This year he directed and filmed 30 dance-narrative videos and a short film for their Moving Together project.

Mikalea Ruddell trained at East 15 Acting School and the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow, practicing Meyerhold's Biomechanics and Chekov with Stanislavski Technique.
During her studies, Mikaela practiced many forms of performance (both Western and non-Western), as well as gaining many interdisciplinary skills and developed a well-rounded approach to theatre and performance. Upon graduation she quickly realised that she wanted to produce work with Project Lockout and help the careers of aspiring actors and performers by assisting at Mary Liz Management.
When Mikaela is not watching Theatre or analysing the latest TV drama, she can often be found making jewellery or pretending that she goes to Hogwarts.

In her early 20’s she puppeteered the Tiger in the world Premier of Running Wild before studying at East 15 Acting school. Whilst at E15 she was encouraged and enlivened by fellow Project Lockout artists and began performing with them; Living with my V (2016) The Things That I’ve Dismissed (2017), Feel The Fear (2018), The Cleaner (2020).
Leading workshops for Project Lockout was an unexpected role which has transformed Susie’s personal perspective and practice:
“In Project Lockout the limits are set by us and thus abolished by us, exploring beyond this is both a gift and a place I love to be. I’ve never been struck by such willingness and generosity in a group,I think that's why people want to work with us, it's not a trick.. But it is magic.”
Susie usually has holes in her shoes... and socks.

When Mark was accepted onto the Physical Theatre Course at East 15 in 2016, he soon began to love the essence of the work and joined Project Lockout as an associate artist and helped create their first show The Things That I've Dismissed.
Mark has been involved in all their theatrical workings since, loving our blend of free-writing, powerful movement and storytelling. He has also helped lead our Creation Day workshops.
Mark's most recent work saw him star in The Pied Piper Theatre Company's touring production of Star in the Jar. Pardon the pun.
Some say he is like a little Michael. Others just say he's little.

Since then Joss has lent his voice to the radio play Marigold Dark, appeared in a production of Cleansed by Sarah Kane at The Courtyard Theatre, as well as in a TV advert for a large brand due to be released in early 2021.
It was during his time at East 15 when Joss joined Project Lockout for their 2018 show Feel The Fear. This production then went on to tour the Camden Fringe, The Southend Fringe Festival and Fusion Festival in Cambridge. Since then, the company has devised another show The Maniac Complex in which Joss plays the leading part of the maniac.
Joss was also the choreographer, writer and performer in Project Lockout’s recent film Artist in Lockdown.
Joss can often be found moving about with one trouser leg rolled up to his knee and the other down by his foot, why you ask? Well… That’s a secret.

Since an early age I have always been fascinated with physical theatre, and Project Lockout for me has always been a great space to experiment with different aspects of this.
From movement direction, to photography and lighting design. I can usually be found backstage, or with a camera trying to capture what physical theatre means to us through film and photography.
For the cost of a coffee you can contribute towards our creative projects, our workshops, training and rehearsals.
